Inspired by Nature: The Story of Backyard Buzz

A Mother & Daughter Small Business in Bucks County, PA

Backyard Buzz is a mother/daughter small business born from a shared love of nature, creativity, and community. What began as a single hive in a Pennsylvania backyard has blossomed into a mission to celebrate and protect our essential pollinators. We are artists, nurses, and stewards of the land. We believe that beekeeping is about more than just harvesting sweet rewards, it is about fostering a connection with the natural world. Through our local raw honey, handcrafted beeswax products, and educational art & education initiatives, we invite you to join us, look closer in your backyard, be inspired by the small beauties buzzing, flying, climbing on the garden plants, resting in the soil, learn about what’s buzzin’ in your backyard. It becomes a special place that we would love for you to explore and become advocates of the amazing creatures right outside your door. A little universe right there at your finger tips, and an important part of the ecosystem that we can all learn from.
~Proudly serving Bucks County and Beeyond since 2015~

Meet the Makers

We blend the precision of science with the beauty of art. Both of us are Registered Nurses, bringing a standard of care and precision to everything we produce, from the hive to the jar.

Nikki is the guardian of the hives. As a Certified Master Beekeeper, she manages our colonies using sustainable, science-based practices that prioritize the health of the honeybees above production. Her expertise extends beyond the hive as a Pollinator Steward & Master Melittologist, studying and advocating for all bees and the habitats they need to survive. Educating the importance of biodiversity and how our community can rewild starting right in their own backyards. "I draw inspiration from the complex beauty of pollinator life. My goal is to blend science and creativity to bring awareness and wonder to every creation."

The Honeybees

Artists, Pollinators, & Foragers

Our honeybees are one of the beginning inspirations for starting our small beesness. Nikki started beekeeping over 10 years ago and during that time we became fascinated about the history of bees, how important they are, and how we can educate about pollinators. Our beehives are located throughout Bucks County, in nectar rich areas to support our bees and other pollinators. We keep our honeybee colonies small as part of our integrated pest management system and allow the bees to build their own foundation, which also means less plastic in each of our beehives. Since varroa mites cause viruses and diseases that can affect neighboring colonies and even our native bees, Nikki vilagintly inspects, manages and intervenes as needed to decrease pests and disease throughout the season. We do not use any synthetic chemicals in any of our beehives and only use organic treatment practices to decrease varroa mite loads in each colony.

Our Logo

Our hand drawn logo tells a story about our small Beesness. The pollinators are based off photographs in our backyard showing the importance of diversity and that all pollinators and the way they pollinate are all different. There are different species of bees such as beautiful flying green gem, the metallic sweat bee, one of my favorite bumbles, the brown belted bumblebee, the reason we started our business, the honeybee. The grass carrying wasp, representing wasps as pollinators, the endangered monarch butterfly the importance of conservation, the hummingbird clearwing moth representing moths as pollinators, and the hummingbird, representing different species that pollinate. We wanted to include the importance of native flowering nectar rich plants throughout the season, bee balm, aster, coneflower, cardinal flower, hyssop, late season goldenrod, and host plants like milkweed. And to tie it all together splashes of paint and paint brush blending our art and education to inspire our community to learn about the importance and diversity of pollinators starting in the backyard.
